How it works

Evacusense lays real satellite fire detections over the real road network, step by step (every 3 hours), and estimates which roads and how many residents were likely cut off from every exit.

• Fire detections: NASA FIRMS (VIIRS and MODIS satellites)
• Satellite imagery: Copernicus Sentinel-2 cloudless, from EOX (2025 version, so it shows the land before the fire)
• Roads and places: OpenStreetMap
• Population: WorldPop 100 m grid (2025 estimate, modelled, not a census)
• Briefings: written by an AI model from the numbers above

How well it matches

Checked against the official BC Wildfire Service fire perimeter: 97% of detections fall inside it, and 87% of its area has a detection within 1 km. Road closures and drive times are not validated.

Limits

• Satellites only see fire when they pass overhead, hours apart.
• “Likely affected” means within 100 m of a detection. It is not an official closure list.
• Drive times are estimated minimums (free-flow, no congestion) from sample points.
• The official Highway 97 closure was longer than what the map marks. No detections were found near Peachland.
• The AI briefings have not been reviewed by native speakers.
